Lot Essay

Barbara Visser is a conceptual artist, photographer, video artist, and performance artist. Her life and work are propelled by curiosity and a productive form of discontent. Visser's exploration of the world manifests in various forms, from conversations to speculations, and from snapshots to feature films. By interrogating objectivity, memory, and belief systems, Visser aims to challenge the perception of normality, often unveiling what is typically rendered invisible
Visser's work is featured in prominent museums such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag in The Hague, the Museum of Modern Art Arnhem, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Additionally, her work can be found at the Museum of Modern Art in Antwerp, Belgium, and the FRAC - Nord-Pas de Calais in Dunkirk, France. Currently, her new film "Alreadymade," a documentary about the authorship of the world-famous contemporary artwork Fontain, is being screened in cinemas across the country.

The work being auctioned was originally commissioned for the Beeldenspoor series at the Rotterdamse Schouwburg by architect Wim Quist in 2013. During her research for the exhibition Opera Aperta at the Venice Biennale in 2011, Visser stumbled upon the history behind the song from Walt Disney's animated film "The Three Little Pigs: Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf." In this context, the wolf was seen as a metaphor for the Great Depression of the 1930s. Adolf Hitler frequently whistled the song and, obsessed with the wolf as an animal, recognized "Wolf" as his own pet name. Visser became captivated by the phrase that traverses through time, art, and society: "Who's afraid..." which continues to resonate today as it did years ago.
