The smaller canvas shows the birth date of the artist. The larger part is a monochrome painting, and the owner of the work is obligated to enter the date of death of the artist, when his passing occurs.

(i) The canvas, stretcher and attachments are in generally good condition. There are stretcher marks visible. There is some rubbing to the extreme edges and corners. To be sold with the original cardboard box. Examination under ultraviolet light shows no indication of inpainting. It is our opinion that the work is in good condition. (ii) The canvas, stretcher and attachments are in generally good condition. The canvas is slack to the stretcher. There are stretcher marks visible. There are canvas draws in the upper right corner. There is some rubbing and wear to the extreme edges and corners, with some associated paint losses to the upper left corner. There is some soft staining in places. There are handling marks in places. There is a diagonal linear indent in upper right quadrant, with some associatedcraquelures. Examination under ultraviolet light shows no indication of inpainting. It is our opinion that the work is in good condition. There is a second small painting included in this lot, 26 x 19.5cm., inscribed 2 Nov. 1957, which was commissioned from the artist in 2007, when the work was to be exhibited in Basel in 2007, and the smaller canvas appeared to be missing. The replacement copy was used for the exhibition. After that, the original smaller canvas was retrieved.
