Dipingere l'aria è molto difficile; dipingere l'aria vuol dire dare una tale plasticità, un tal volume, una tale forza della forma alle cose, che tra un oggetto e l'altro si senta circolare l'aria e che gli oggetti appaiano come sospesi, immobili, ma vivi nell'aria che si sposta, che si muove, mentre le cose sembrano fermate, immobilizzate, come per effetto di magia, con le loro frontiere, i loro promontori, le loro terrazze, le loro torri, i loro belvederi, i loro orizzonti.

Painting air is really hard; painting air means giving such plasticity, such volume, such a strength to the form of things, that between one object and another you can feel air circulating and that objects appear as if suspended, motionless, yet alive in the air that blows, moves around, while things seem stationary, immobilised, as if by magic, with their frontiers, their promontories, their terraces, their towers, their belvedere, their horizons.
