Nicola De Maria descrive se stesso come "chi scrive un poema con le dita sporche di colore, mentre cane e gatto, chiusi nella tana del cuore, sono la pittura e la poesia che si battono per il trionfo dell'arte". L'analogia con la poesia è davvero la più indicata per le sue opere pittoriche, che sono la trasposizione lirica dell'universo interiore dell'artista. Ogni quadro o opera ambientale è la resa in colori accesi della predisposizione dell'artista a incarnare la figura del poeta, insieme a quelle del cantore e del narratore. Secondo De Maria, dovere dell'artista è infatti "trasformare gli incidenti e la brutalità del mondo in bellezza ed armonia, nell’infinita verità del bene" e il fine dell'arte "è evocare ciò che è invisibile, testimoniare l'opera suprema di Dio; quando l'artista partecipa alla creazione, la pittura porta la realtà verso l'assoluto". I riferimenti alla natura presenti nelle opere sono la memoria e la nostalgia dell'origine, espressa attraverso il linguaggio di una ritrovata innocenza. Più che resa figurativa del mondo visibile, ciascuna forma dipinta è piuttosto una personale visione dell'essenza altrimenti invisibile delle cose.

Nicola De Maria describes himself as "one who writes a poem, fingers dirty with paint, while closed off in the heart's lair are a dog and cat - painting and poetry - which duel for the triumph of art". The analogy with poetry is an apt one, for his pictorial works are the lyrical transposition of the artist's inner universe. Each painting or environmental work is evidence of, in vivid colors, the artist's ability to embody the figure of the poet, along with that of the storyteller and the narrator. According to De Maria, the artist's duty is "to transform the mishaps and the brutality of the world into beauty and harmony, in the infinite truth of goodness", and the goal of art is "to evoke what is invisible, to bear witness to the supreme work of God; when the artist participates in creation, painting brings reality toward the absolute". In his works, references to nature are the memory of and the nostalgia for origins, expressed through the language of a re-found innocence. More than a figurative representation of the visible world, each painted form is, rather, a personal vision of the otherwise invisible essence of things.
