MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus (1756-1791)
Missa pro defunctis Requiem … Seelenmesse mit unterlegtem deutschem Texte. Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, [after 1801].
First edition, fifth issue. The uncredited German text is by Johann Arnold Minder, a Lutheran pastor in Hamburg. A more literal German translation of the text of the Requiem by Christian August Clodius (1737-1784) and the Parodie by Johann Adam Hiller (1728-1804) appears on the final leaf, and are also written to fit the music. Haberkamp pp. 385-87; RISM M4050/51 (not distinguishing between issues).

Oblong folio (267 x 340mm). Engraved frontispiece, dedication leaf to the Duke of Saxony, 178 pp., final leaf with German translation by Prof. C.A.H. Clodius (frontispiece lightly creased, variable light spotting and browning throughout). Original lithographic green wrappers with geometric border (rebacked with wrappers mounted, small portion of rear wrapper defective affecting border). Provenance: ink ownership inscription on title.
