Hermann Hesse (1877-1962)
Typescript signed ('Hermann Hesse' on title) and illustrated with the author's watercolours of 'Drei Gedichte' (Three Poems), n.d. [after 1949]
Autograph title ('Drei Gedichte von Hermann Hesse') within hand-drawn floral roundel and typescripts of 'Bei der Nachricht vom Tod eines Freundes', 'Verfrühter Herbst' and 'Papierlaternen im nächtlichen Garten' on separate leaves, each illustrated with Hesse's watercolours; title page on green paper, poems on brown paper, together four leaves, 250 x 181mm. Provenance: Sotheby's, 11 November 1982, lot 121.

Three typescript poems with Hesse's delicate watercolour illustrations. 'Papierlaternen im nächtlichen Garten' (otherwise titled 'Lampions in der Sommernacht') was first published in 1929, 'Bei der Nachricht vom Tod eines Freundes' in in 1930, 'Verfrühter Herbst' in 1949. The illustration to 'Verfrühter Herbst' is clearly inspired by the landscape of Ticino/Tessin in southern Switzerland, where Hesse lived from 1919 onwards. Such illustrated poems are a highly characteristic production of the last 20 years of Hesse's life.
