In six large A4 archive boxes comprised approximately 21 A4 wallet folders. Provenance: Sotheby’s, 20 & 21 July 1981, lot 295.

Herschel family correspondence including letters to Sir John Frederick William Herschel, some from fellow 19th-century luminaries, along with an autograph manuscript notebook; and a significant quantity of Colonel John Herschel’s correspondence relating to the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Chiefly comprising letters received by J.F.W. Herschel, Colonel John Herschel and other family members, from colleagues and family, the majority 19th century.

The J.F.W. Herschel correspondence comprising letters from correspondents including Richard Owen, Matthew Arnold (5), William Gladstone, a longer series from William Whewell (often on literary matters, especially relating to his translation of Homer) and Charles Pritchard, with very many from Herschel's family; a small number of autograph letters by J.F.W.; an autograph manuscript notebook (1861-65) containing mostly household notes, lists of books, accounts and agenda alongside draft literary fragments;

The Colonel John Herschel correspondence comprising numerous letters from India, 1850s-1870s, including a long series from his wife, Mary;

Along with: journals (including a pair belonging to Caroline Emilia Mary Herschel (1830-1909) and Isabella Herschel (1831-1891) covering their time in Geneva, May to November 1842, and visits to England in 1845); and scattered diaries, printed charts, an 18th-century title deed, and memorabilia, including a pencil-case thought to belong to J.F.W.; with some 20th-century family papers and indexes.
