The present painting was illustrated in the September 1899 issueof Harpers New Monthly Magazine, accompanying the article "The Storming of Fort Pillow" by John A. Wyeth.

On April 12, 1864, Confederate troops led by General Nathan Bedford Forrest stormed the Union forces holding the lines at Fort Pillow, Tennessee, on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. The attack at dawn overwhelmed the Union soldiers, ultimately resulting in a Confederate victory.
