Lot Essay

The crest on the present lot is that of Stephens, likely for Henry Charles Stephens (1841-1918), who sat in the House of Commons for the Conservative Party from 1887 to 1900 for the Hornsey division of Middlesex. Having grown up in Finchley, North London, Stephens proposed and partially financed the establishment of Victoria Park in Finchley to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, which opened in 1902 as the first public park in the area.
