The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This panel has been cradled on the reverse, with thin batons applied along the upper and lower edges of the panel. The panel has a horizontal grain and shows signs of an old woodworm infestation that is no longer active. The paint layer is stable overall under a thickly applied varnish that has bubbled on the right side of the panel. Cracks throughout the panel are visible in natural light, most notably in the lower right (measuring approximately 10.5 inches long) and the lower left (measuring approximately 14 inches long) of the painting. Restoration to address cracking in the panel are visible in natural light as they have discolored with age, particularly in the sky at upper right as visible in the catalogue image. Retouching to address what appears to be an old woodworm channel measuring approximately 3 inches long is also visible in natural light and in the catalogue image at extreme upper right. Inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by the cloudy varnish. The painting may be hung in its present state. Please note the frame is sold as is.
