Bannister Hall printworks was found around 1798 in Lancashire England by Richard Jackson and John Stephenson. The firm was a leading producer of woodblock printed cottons (chintzes), very popular at the time, and often influenced the furnishing fabric fashions of the day. Between 1809 and 1825 Bannister Hall was owned by Charles Swainson (1780-1866), a cotton tradesman and politician who also designed patterns for the firm. For an example of the Bannister Hall pattern see the Winterthur Museum collection (1958.0062.004 A).
