Kataro Shirayamadani was born in Kanazawa, Japan in 1865 and spent a total of 52 years as a decorator at Rookwood in two periods between 1887 and his death in 1948, holding the distinction of being the firm's first decorator who was not American-born. His early works were included in the group that earned Rookwood its Gold Medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, and he continued to pioneer new shapes and processes including the firm's celebrated metal-mounted wares, throughout his long tenure.
For further examples by Kataro Shirayamadani, see lots 209 and 277.
