Clarice Cliff (1899-1972) was the first woman to be appointed art director of a major ceramics company (Newport Pottery) and is considered a pioneering artist and ceramicist . During the 1920s and 30s she worked with her team to produce a wide range of uniquely shaped and brightly decorated objects, dubbed ‘Bizarre’ wares, intended for domestic use including plates, jugs, teapots, and cups inspired by the Art Deco and Cubist movements. In 1934 Cliff worked with another popular female artist Dame Laura Knight (1977-1970) to produce the circus-themed service seen here for Harrods of London and featured in their campaign titled ‘Modern Art for the Table’.
