拍品專文

Standing with his hands clasped over his chest in a gesture of eternal worship and wearing a tufted, feather-like skirt, thought to be a stylization of animal skins, this fragmentary figure represents a worshipper. Part of a cuneiform inscription remains running down the back of the proper right shoulder, most likely giving the dedicator's name.

Worshipper figures of various sizes were most likely representations of men and women, tokens of devotion that were placed in temples on benches against the walls. When the temple became too full, they were buried in sacred pits within the temple. For similar worshippers, although of larger scale, see nos. 38-43 in P. Amiet, Art of the Ancient Near East, New York, 1980.
