The canvas is unlined; it is held under tension and remains stable. Examination in natural light shows scattered retouching to the sky, as illustrated online. Examination under UV light confirms this retouching. There is evidence of partial cleaning to an old varnish, which remains in certain parts of the work, notably on the left-hand façade of the palace and in the smaller boats on the water. The paint layers are stable.
