Some general fading and discolouration to the pigments of both, consistent with age and exposure to natural light. Some crazing to the paint of the upper right section of the lady with the letter; area of paint loss to her neck; losses to her bodice. There appear to be significant retouches to her shoulders and other areas as well. The area below her arms has been largely overpainted obliterating the detail that perhaps was once there.
The other lady with small areas of loss to the upper right corner. The bodice and gown, as well as the lower hand all look as though they have been restored.
The frames with inevitable scratches, marks, knocks, rubbing and wear to the decoration, consistent with age and handling. The corner joins are visible to both where there has been slight movement. Lined with brown paper to the reverse.
