拍品專文

These unusual sutra covers are each embroidered with the 'Five Poisons' - the toad, lizard, scorpion, centipede and snake - that are said to form an elixir that neutralizes evil. The five together are a talisman used to counteract evil on Duanwujie (Dragon Boat Festival), the fifth day of the fifth month that marks the beginning of summer. The day is seen as one of the most inauspicious days of the year as it is the day when poisonous animals begin to appear.
