Lot Essay

The base bears a square seal mark Fu, for happiness.There is a comparable dish in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, H B Harris bequest, c119-1929. Another related dish is illustrated in Seventeenth Century Chinese Porcelain from the Butler Family Collection, Michael Butler, Margaret Medley and Stephen Little, 1990, no. 29, where the authors state that the hen and chicks design is taken from the woodblocks illustrated in the Cao Ben Shu Pu (The Grass Poetry Manual), published by Huang Fengchi in Huizhou, Anhui Province in1621.
