Aimé-Jules Dalou (1838 –1902) was a sculptor and curator at the Louvre. In 1889 his was awarded the Grand Prix at the Paris Exposition Universelle. A plaster version of the present sculpture, La Liseuse, is recorded in the Petit Palais museum, Paris, circa 1904 (see A. Giraudon, Catalogue de l'oeuvre de Jules Dalou, 1904).
