Lot Essay

Seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base with a beaded rim, with hands folded in his lap, the present lot portrays the Amitabha Buddha. He is dressed in a dhoti with folds draped over his left shoulder and falling gracefully onto his lap. His hair is arranged in tight curls, with the ushnisha capped by a knop. His face is characterised by downcast eyes, a subtle smile and a overall serene, peaceful expression, flanked by elongated earlobes typical of Amitabha representations.
Compare the present lot to a Nepalese Amitabha sold at Christie’s New York on 15 March 2016, lot 242, for $32,500.
