The present lot depicts Tara seated in dhyanasana on a lotus base. Her right hand is in bhumisparsha mudra, while her left is in vitarkamudra, the gesture of debate and discussion. The bhumisaparsha mudra carries profound significance; it symbolises the moment of enlightenment, unshakable resolve and connection to the earth. The gestures embodies the affirmation of enlightenment, serving as a symbol of truth and a source of inspiration. Surmounted by a crown, Tara is beautifully bejewelled with pendant earrings, necklaces and bracelets. She is dressed in an antaravasaka as an inner garment and a sanghati as an outer garment that covers her shoulders and gracefully falls onto her lap. Compare the present lot to a Nepalese Tara sold at Christie’s New York on 28 March 2024, lot 8, for $12,600.
