Zeng Jianyong excels in using ink and wash to render beautiful yet distant childhood memories in his compositions. In adding the black neckerchief on the girls, Zeng endowed the youngsters with a "hope-of-our-future" status. The artist made excellent use of the unique attributes of Su Mo (overnight ink) with multiple applications, accentuating the blackness of the neckerchief. The girls' round, big eyes are bright and clear; their tilted heads and puzzled looks suggest innocence, while the faint, pink capillaries on the cheeks imply their vulnerability to worldly influences. The artwork also demonstrates the 'commonness' of the social groups. The children seem to imitate each other's behavior and expression, elucidating the social reality in an intriguing context.
