First edition, illustrated with 34 engraved maps, of an essential atlas for navigating departures from the French colony of Saint Domingue in the Caribbean. Jacques Nicolas Bellin held official status as royal hydrographer and ingéniuer géographe de la marine et du Dépot des Cartes et Plans. He was responsible for compiling atlases of sailing charts for military and official use as well as for commercial publication and was a contributor to Diderot’s Encyclopedie. The author justifies the present work as follows: ‘Il est [...) indispensable, en quittant les Ports de cette Isle, de faire route au Nord: mais cette navigation n'est pas sans danger.’ Polak, 591; Sabin 4552.
