For around 45 minutes, astronaut Michael Collins (ii) was completely cut off from communication with his Apollo 11 crewmates and NASA mission control back on Earth. While Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin approached the lunar surface from their module (i), Collins was in a state of utmost solitude on the Apollo 11 spacecraft as it orbited round the far side of the Moon. Collins later remarked that the moment was "very peaceful — no one in Mission Control yakkin' at me and wanting me to do this, that, and the other."
