Rare first English translation of Tofino's Derrotero de las costas de España (1789). '[In view of] the high estimation of this Nautical Survey of the Coast of Spain, and the great difficulty of procuring it, several distinguished Officers of the Royal Navy repeatedly urged the necessity of printing an English edition for the Public Service [during the Peninsular Wars]' (preface). Palau 332937, calling for 29 plates and 20pp. at end, but the 28 plates present here correspond with the contents listing and match other institutional records, which also do not call for the final 20pp.

Quarto (273 x 215mm). 28 engraved folding maps (light browning offsetting, some light staining to margins of charts). Modern half calf.
