The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is in a good state of conservation. It is painted on a thick panel (c. 25 mm.) made of two boards, perhaps mahogany wood, with beveled edges. The reverse of the panel has been covered with a brown preparation that helped to preserve it and worked as an isolation. The panel is stable and very straight. To prevent a split of the panel, the panel has been reinforced on its reverse with a horizontal piece of mahogany wood insert along the fragile part of the junction of the boards.
The paint surface is very stable and we cannot notice any lift of painting.
We notice in the lower part (lower right and left corners) some premature craquelures caused by the initial preparation of the painter using too much drying. We notice the restorations along the crack afore mentioned.
Under UV lighting the painting is covered in a yellow coat of even varnish. We notice a thin line of restoration along the junction of the panel.
We notice some restoration in the lower left and right corners, on the ground, and some parts of the clothes of the figures at the centre of the composition have been heightened. There are small retouches above the figures of the procession (above the ones at the head of the cortege). Very slight retouches in the sky.
In a gilt frame 91 x 112 cm. (351⁄4 x 441⁄8 in.)
We are grateful to Monsieur Bernard Depretz from the Atelier Depretz, independent restorer, for his kind assistance in writing this condition report and to Monsieur Patrick Mandron, independent restorer for the information on the panel of the painting.
