Fleetwood Pellew Wilson (1808-1888) was a rich industrialist who made much of his fortune as a ship owner and coffee planter in Bahia, Brazil. His London residence was at 30 Portman Square, he had property in Scotland and acquired Wappenham Manor, near Towcester, Northamptonshire. His only daughter and heiress Frances Fleetwood Wilson (1850-1919) married Prince Alexei Dolgorouki, a Russian Prince and Chamberlain to the Tsar, in 1898.

The canvas has been lined. There are some light scuffs to the varnish. Some surface dirt and some general surface craquelure. An areas of possible bitumenisation in the brown pigments upper left quadrant.
Under UV light there are small touches of inpainting to the forehead of the sitter, his left hand cheek, and small touches around his collar. There is inpainting to the fine craquelure in his left hand and scattered, minimal retouching to the background. The old varnish fluoresces.
