Il quadrante circolare smaltato è stato reintegrato, ha numeri romani ed è firmato LESPINESSE, A PARIGI, gli angoli dell'obelisco sono decorati con maschere di leone che fiancheggiano un cammeo ovale che rappresenta una figura che guida una biga, nella cui parte superiore vi è un piatto contenente sementi drappeggiato con fiori e bacche. I lati e la parte posteriore presentano diversi trofei musicali, con un altro trofeo in alto e decorazioni di nuvole stilizzate, sormontati da una parte finale scanalata, il barometro presenta Nettuno e Cupido seduti alla base che sorreggono anch’essi il quadrante oggetto di una reintegrazione, gli angoli decorati con teste di delfino, la colonnina di mercurio fuoriesce da un cesto di frutta, i lati e il retro sono ornati con trofei che rappresentano le quattro stagioni, un elemento delle nuvole del barometro è mancante

Questo imponente orologio con barometro da tavolo è strettamente legato a modelli in scala minore del XVIII secolo, datati circa 1780, conservati alla Wallace Collection di Londra [F94 e F95] e all'orologio singolo con Nettuno alla base del Musée Nissim de Camondo di Parigi [Inv. CAM 601]. La forma degli obelischi ebbe fortuna per tutti gli anni '70 e '80 del XVIII secolo sia in Francia che in Inghilterra, perché riflettevano la rinascita dell'interesse per l'architettura classica romana. Il primo libro di modelli di Matthew Boulton presentava undici disegni di obelischi, tre dei quali erano casse di orologi ornate da figure classiche. La coppia di obelischi qui presentata è notevole per le sue dimensioni imponenti (quasi un metro di altezza), per l'uso sontuoso dei lapizlazzuli, per la qualità degli elementi bronzei nonché per esser stati concepiti a tutto tondo.

È raro che una coppia sopravviva, quindi si è tentati di pensare che questa possa essere la coppia a cui Peter Hughes fa riferimento come “un esempio di barometro del diciannovesimo secolo assimilabile al F95… che accompagna un orologio che assomiglia al F94” in The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Furniture I, London, 1996, p. 348, che sono stati venduti dalla collezione di Herrn Commerzienrat Geo Ehni, Albert Duss, Kunst und Antiquitatenhandler, Stuttgart, 1 October 1888, lot 719. Soprattutto se si considera che le misure dettagliate fornite nella descrizione del 1888 sembrano corrispondere: ‘Aug einer 50 X 40 cm grossen Onyxplattee stebt eine Pyramide aus Lapis lazuli aug swei Ubereinander liegenden Patten aus Lapis, derne untere 42 X 33 cm gross ist’. La leggera discrepanza tra l'altezza di 105 cm e quella di 101 cm potrebbe essere dovuta alla mancanza della base in onice per quanto riguarda la presente coppia.

Altri esempi del XIX secolo della cassa dell'orologio con Nettuno alla base si differenziano per la scelta del marmo o della pietra dura. Un esemplare strettamente correlato al modello di Nissim è stato venduto da Christie's, New York, 17 maggio 2006, lotto 314 dalla Collezione di Evelyn Annenberg Hall (31.200 dollari, premio incluso) e un altro esemplare con marmo verde antico e marmo di siena è stato venduto in forma anonima da un importante collezionista newyorkese da Christie's, New York, 28 aprile - 7 maggio 2020, lotto 149 (21.250 dollari).


This impressive clock and barometer en suite is closely related to smaller scale 18th century models, dated circa 1780, at the Wallace Collection, London [F94 and F95] and single clock with Neptune at the base at the Musée Nissim de Camondo, Paris [Inv. CAM 601]. Obelisks were a popular form throughout the 1770 and 80s in both France and England, reflecting the revival of interest in classical Roman architecture. Matthew Boulton's first pattern book featured eleven obelisk designs, three of which were clock cases adorned with classical figures. The pair presented here are remarkable for their grand scale - standing almost a metre high, the lavish use of lapiz lazuli, for the fine quality of the bronzes and for the fact that they are conceived in the round.

It is rare that a pair survives, so it is tempting to think that this may be the pair that Peter Hughes refers to as ‘a nineteenth-century barometer version of F95….accompanying a clock resembling F94’ in The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Furniture I, London, 1996, p.348, which were sold from the collection of Herrn Commerzienrat Geo Ehni, Albert Duss, Kunst und Antiquitatenhandler, Stuttgart, 1 October 1888, lot 719. Particularly given the detailed measurements provided in the 1888 description appear to match: ‘Aug einer 50 X 40 cm grossen Onyxplattee stebt eine Pyramide aus Lapis lazuli aug swei Ubereinander liegenden Patten aus Lapis, derne untere 42 X 33 cm. gross ist’. The slight discrepancy in the height 105 cm. versus 101 cm. could be accounted for by the lack of the onyx base on the present pair.

Other 19^th century examples of the clock case with Neptune at the base vary in the choice of marble or hardstone. An example closely related to the Nissim model was sold at Christie’s, New York, 17 May 2006, lot 314 from The Collection of Evelyn Annenberg Hall ($31,200 including premium) and a further example with verde antico and siena marble was sold anonymously by an Important New York Collector, Christie’s, New York, 28 April – 7 May 2020, lot 149 ($21,250).
