‘The best novel about the blitz written during the second world war’ (Norman Sherry): first edition in the original dust-jacket. One of Greene’s ‘entertainments’, he wrote the manuscript whilst on assignment in Siera Leone, and drew the title from a poem by Wordsworth. Wobbe A18.

Original yellow cloth, spine lettered in black, publisher’s device stamped on lower cover in black, Daily Telegraph magazine clipping (13 April 1973) loosely inserted (head/ and tailcap lightly bruised); original printed dust-jacket (spine just sunned, small chips and wear at spine ends, a couple of short closed tears, price-clipped); housed in modern dark green quarter morocco box.
