Lot Essay

The present Ulysse Nardin pocket watch is impressive for a few reasons. First it features a complicated movement: a minute repeater that repeats on two hammers to a gong. Second it has a bold and heavy gold case. Third, and perhaps most noticeably, it features intricate monograms on the case. The hinged front shows three sets of initials intertwined with one another and expertly placed to echo the circular case. It is possible there was an entire family involved in the provenance of this late 19th-century timepiece or perhaps a group of friends who passed it on from one to another. Whatever the story that is left to unearth, it is clear this watch holds a fanciful charm unlike most others. The case, dial, and movement are signed Ulysse Nardin.
