Lot Essay

In 1895, Toulouse-Lautrec visited the café-concert Les Décadents to see Jane Avril dance. There he discovered another star, the Irish singer May Belfort, who was soon to become a favorite subject of his, and he depicted her in no fewer than six lithographs. She used to appear on stage in pastel-colored dresses with puffed sleeves, carrying in her arms a little black cat. Her speciality was a rendition of 'Daddy wouldn't buy me a bow-wow' sung in a distinctly knowing manner. For all her mock-innocent airs, May Belfort was famous for her lesbian affairs, most notably with May Milton, another of the English-speaking singers then en vogue. Commissioned by Belfort, Lautrec designed this poster as a pendant to the poster of Belfort's lover and fellow performer, May Milton.
