These plates were commissioned by Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis (dubbed Princess TNT by Vanity Fair) for the occasion of her 29th birthday, which Mr. Talley attended. Keith Haring was a noted friend of the Princess and there were around five-hundred attendees, as noted by Talley in an article for Vogue in 2010 ('Hat Shopping with André Leon Talley', Vogue Online, October 27, 2010). Haring also designed the party invitations, which took the form of the sleeve for a vinyl record; one of which is now in the collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA Object No. 854.2013.130).
