FURTHER DETAILS
A SWISS ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A ROMAN MICROMOSAIC PLAQUE
THE BOX BY JEAN-FRANÇOIS BAUTTE & CO., GENEVA, CIRCA 1830, THE MICROMOSAIC, BY GIOACCHINO BARBERI, ROME, CIRCA 1830
Shaped rectangular, the cover inset with a fine rectangular micromosaic depicting two spitzs on a leopard skin, the cover, sides and base enamelled in black and white on a taille d'épargne ground with foliage and flowers within reeded borders, the four sides and base enamelled with opalescent coloured hunting scenes, the flange engraved 'J.F. BAUTTE & COP.ie A GENEVE', the micromosaic signed 'Barberi', marked in cover and base with maker's mark tree times and 18 k., in a later brown fitted leather case stamped BULGARI ROMA

This fine box was made by Jean-Francois Bautte & Compagnie, famous for its musical and mechanical objects in gold and enamel.
Jean-François Bautte (1772-1837) was the son of a Geneva enameller, Abraham Bautte. He began his apprenticeship in 1789 in the workshop of box makers Jacques-Dauphin Moulinié (1761-1838) and Jean-François Blanchot. In 1793, they went into partnership under the name Moulinié & Bautte. On October 1, 1804, Jean-Gabriel Moynier (1772-1840), a Geneva watchmaker, joined them and the workshop was renamed Moulinié, Bautte & Cie, before becoming Moulinié, Bautte et Moynier in 1808. After Moulinié's departure in 1824, Bautte and Moynier continued their activity under the name Bautte and Moynier until 1831 when Moynier set up alone. Jean-Francois Bautte therefore also continued alone until 1855 when his son, in partnership since 1837 with Jean-Samuel Rossel, took over the business under the name Rossel-Bautte et Cie to become Rossel et fils in 1861.

Bautte's pieces stands out for the richness of their enamelling evident in this snuff-box with its abundance of leafy scrolls reminiscent of 17th century Aristoloche tapestries. Bautte collaborated with other great artisans including Jean-Louis Richter (1766-1841), considered the greatest Swiss enameller known for his Swiss landscapes on an opalescent background to simulate a sunset or sunrise. In the same way, Bautte regularly, if not exclusively, used micromosaics by Barberi.

The Barberi family, established in Rome, was renowned for its micromosaics. Michelangelo (1787-1867) produced table tops while his uncle Gioacchino made micromosaics. Gioacchino is renowned for having invented black enamel tesserae and known for his animal subjects, generally after paintings and breathtakingly realistic.
