The cann of baluster form with leaf-capped scroll handle, engraved with script monogram JMS, the rattles of typical form, one decorated with incised bands, cann marked SHEP/HERD on underside, one rattle marked for La Pierre Mfg., Newark NJ, the other with maker's mark an eagle

Lot Essay

The monogram JMS probably relates to a member of the Spellman family. David Rockefeller's paternal grandmother was Laura Celestia "Cettie" Spelman Rockefeller (1839–1915), an important American abolitionist. Laura had an elder adopted sister, Lucy Maria "Lute" Spelman (1837-1920).
