Lot Essay

This Kändler model of a merchant's wife is rather well known. I had seen examples of it in a number of museums. I have always felt that it was one of the best Meissen pieces we bought.
D.R.

Kändler modeled the 'Prudent wife' circa 1757-58 and was inspired by the engraving L'oeconome after a painting by Jean-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779). An identical model is illustrated and discussed in A. Gräfin von Wallwitz, Celebrating Käendler, Munich, 2006, cat. 28.
