On spreading base chased with ribbon-tied berried laurel leaves, le body chased with a representation of the Testament of Solomon featuring the king depicted as a sorcerer and defying a dragon, the plain side handle with bifurcated thumbpiece, the domed hinged cover chased in centre with a coat-of-arms, later engraved on plain section of the body below the scene with the initials EP, marked underside: town and maker

This tankard is listed in Schliemann but the scene is described as the meeting between King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. In fact, it is a depiction of the Testament of Solomon. This narrative, written between the 2nd and 5th centuries BC, tells the story of how Solomon, son of David and king of Jerusalem, receives a ring engraved with a seal from an archangel. This ring allows him to summon demons and either force them to build his Temple or imprison them within the ring. The story ends with Solomon's decline, misadvised by the demons, and its moral is that one should avoid straying from the right path, lest they face dire consequences.

Schliemann répertorie ce tankard où la scène est décrite comme la rencontre entre le roi Salomon et la reine de Saba. Il s’agit en fait d’une représentation du Testament de Salomon. Ce récit rédigé entre le IIe et le Ve siècle avant J.C. raconte comment Salomon, fils de David et roi de Jérusalem reçoit d’un archange un anneau gravé d’un sceau qui lui permet de conjurer les démons et de les condamner soit à construire son Temple soit à les enfermer dans l’anneau. Le récit se termine par le déclin de Salomon mal conseillé par les démons et dont la morale est qu’il faut éviter de sortir du droit chemin sous peine de conséquences funestes.
