Tronconique sur base évasée, ciselé de motifs auriculaires à l'imitation de l'écorce d'un arbre sur fond amati et encadrant trois médaillons ovales gravés au centre d'un personnage en habit du XVIIe siècle, dans un paysage urbain, le personnage central sur un cheval armé d'une épée, le couvercle à charnière centrée d'armoiries d'alliance sous les initiales HBMHF, l'appuie-pouce en forme de feuilles, poinçons sur le bord de la base: ville et maître-orfèvre

Les armoiries gravées sur le couvercle sont celles des familles von Hahnebohm originaires du Courlande (Lettonie) et des Frieneck originaires de Suisse.

AN ESTONIAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER TANKARD
MARK OF STANISLAUS SCHULTZE (1643-1657), TALLINN (REVAL), CIRCA 1650
On spreading base, chased with auricular motifs imitating the bark of a tree on textured ground, framing three medallions featuring two men in full 17th century merchants costume standing with city in the background and in the middle a man on horseback holding a sword, the hinged cover engraved with accollé coat-of-arms and initials HBMHF above, the thumbpiece cast as leaves, marked on foot-rim: town and maker

The arms are those of the Hahnebohm from Courland (Latvia) and the Frieneck from Switzerland.
Tallinn is strategically located on the Baltic Sea and its port became an important trading centre from the 14th century as the northernmost member of the Hanseatic League. The engraved figures of merchants are thus typical of those found on Hanseatic tankard made in cities such as Hamburg and Riga for rich merchants.

Tallinn est stratégiquement située sur la mer Baltique et son port est devenu un important centre commercial à partir du XIVe siècle, en tant que membre le plus au nord de la Ligue hanséatique.
Les figures gravées de marchands sont donc typiques de celles que l'on trouve sur les tankards hanséatiques fabriqués dans des villes comme Hambourg et Riga pour les riches marchands.

Pour un tankard similaire voir op. cit. 1991, No 67 par le même orfèvre, cette fois gravé plutôt que ciselé de motifs auriculaires encadrant des médaillions centrés par des personnages en habit de riches marchands.
