The canvas is unlined. There is a patch to the centre of the lower right quadrant as viewed from the reverse.
There is some craquelure visible in Cordelia's blue cloak.
Under UV light the picture appears to have been partially cleaned and there are areas of an old milky varnish visible which makes reading some of the canvas difficult. There is a small area of inpainting to the right of Lear's beard corresponding to the patch on the reverse. Some further retouching under Cordelia's chin and nose. There are some areas of infilling to craquelure near the lower edge of the picture.
