The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is executed on canvas, which has been relined and is held under tension. The firm relining has somewhat flattened the texture of the paint surface. Thinning to the upper paint glazes, with associated discoloured strengthening, is present in the darker tones. Examination in natural light reveals several minor accretions, lower left. A network of craquelure is visible across the surface of the painting, particularly visible in the lighter tones of the sky. An uneven yellow varnish is present.
Examination under UV reveals at least two campaigns of restoration, including minor infill to craquelure; scattered retouching through the figures; aforementioned strengthening to the darker tones in the foliage and foreground, including several repaired tears. The old varnish precludes further analysis.
