Lot Essay

The inscription on the relining canvas identifies the sitter as Anne Webb, née Smith, the daughter of John and Mary Smith of South Tidworth, Wiltshire. In 1662, Jane married Colonel Edmund Richmond Webb, with whom she had 6 children. Edmund was a colonel in the army, an MP, and later, gentleman usher to Prince George of Denmark. These connections at court lay the groundwork for successful military and political careers for their children, particularly their third son, General John Richmond Webb. The inscription also notes that Jane was the sister of John Smith, who served twice as Chanceller of the Exchequer (1699-1701 and 1708-1710) and Speaker of the House of Commons (1705-1708).
