The marks found on this box are discussed in H. Williams, 18th-Century Snuffboxes: Snuffboxes in the Iakobachvili Collection, vol. I, Monaco, 2024, p. 409-410. Williams explains that this maker's mark is found on more than seven thousand enamelled snuff-boxes over the course of about twenty-five years suggesting that the mark is that of a workshop rather than a single maker. All the boxes with these marks are all mostly gold enamelled generally en plein and all numbered on the flange. Although the marking may vary slightly there is a consistency in the combination of marks suggesting various workmen scattered throughout the town. In this instance the marks would suggest that it was made in the latter part of the eighteenth century. The style of this box, as well as that of this workshop in general, was in the past associated with that of Geneva made boxes, suggesting that some of these workmen had worked in Geneva learning not only the techniques but also the colour palette and the subject matters.
