The canvas has an old lining. From the reverse several areas of toning to the lining are present. The painting presents well in natural light. Craquelure is present throughout the painting, with some minor associated and discoloured infill. Small areas of this craquelure appear to be raised under raking light in the centre foreground and would benefit from consolidation.

Examination under UV confirms the above and reveals minor scattered retouching throughout, slight strengthening to the contours of the horses and two more recent small areas of restoration; in the aforementioned foreground, where the craquelure is raised, and to the background riders on the right-hand edge. The painting is covered by several layers of old varnish which precludes further analysis but additional restoration cannot be ruled out.
