Each with shaped oval backplate with earl's coronet cresting, cast and chased with scrolls on a matted ground and with two putti holding an oval ribbon-tied laurel wreath centered by a detachable cypher 'HC', the lower edge mounted with a scrolled branch supporting a spool-shaped socket and gadrooned drip pan, marked on reverse and on sockets; with scratch weights 22=2 and 23=3 / 22:15; each fitted with later suspension hook
712 in. (19 cm.) high
45 oz. (1,401 gr.)
The cypher HC with earl's coronet above is likely to be for Henry Hyde, 2nd Earl of Clarendon (1638-1709), who succeeded his father in 1674. A study of earldoms extant in 1695 does not suggest any other possible candidate.
