A CHINESE EXPORT BLACK AND GILT LACQUER BUREAU-CABINET
LORD PLENDER Lord Plender of Sunridge was one of several distinguished collectors of English furniture advised by the furniture historian R. W. Symonds (d. 1958) and his collection formed the basis of several articles by Symonds, published in Apollo and the German journal Pantheon in 1930-31 (C. Streeter & M. Barker, 'A Bibliography of Publications by Robert Wemyss Symonds', Furniture History, 1975, pp. 88-107). Symonds included several pieces from Lord Plender's collection in his seminal book on 18th century English furniture Masterpieces of English Furniture and Clocks, London, 1940, and also in his earlier publication, Old English Walnut and Lacquer Furniture, 1923.

Overall a beautiful lacquer cabinet and in good preserved condition. Remarkable survival or original lacquer surfaces. With typical inevitable marks, nicks, small losses and repairs throughout, commensurate with age. The lacquer with some craquelure throughout as to be expected, but is stable. The lower sides of the cabinet with minor vertical age splits, well-repaired and stable. Some scuffs to the shaped plinth base. The upper cabinets with one key. The slant-front bureau lacking a key but is unlocked and can be opened and closed. One pull on lower drawers is loose. Overall a wonderful piece. Ready to use.
