Lot Essay

This distinctive torchère closely resembles a pair in the Palladio Room at Clandon Park, Surrey. They were likely acquired by George Onslow, 4th Baron (d. 1814)—later created Baron Cranley, Viscount Cranley, and the 1st Earl of Onslow. A Lord-in-Waiting to George III, Onslow maintained a close relationship with George, Prince of Wales.
