The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is executed on canvas, which is held under strict tension and has a hard relining. A vertical line of retouching, some of which has discoloured, runs from the upper to the lower edge, through the young girl's arm and dress. This possibly corresponds to a canvas join, which is not visible from the reverse due to the relining. Minor historic frame abrasion to each edge is present. Throughout the composition there are minor scattered losses with associated retouching, and a network of craquelure with some associated infill, which in both cases has discoloured in some areas. Examination under UV confirms the above and reveals two small areas of recent retouching in the back and leg of the chair, and in the sitter's dress. An old varnish precludes further analysis, but additional restoration cannot be ruled out.
