A LOUIS XV ORMOLU-MOUNTED BLACK, GILT AND POLYCHROME CHINESE LACQUER AND VERNIS MARTIN COMMODE
The present commode is distinguished by the striking panel of polychrome Chinese lacquer used to decorate the front. Originally intended to be seen vertically and showing large peony branches on rocky ground, it has here been employed horizontally, almost creating the effect of a bold textile pattern. Jacques Dubois appears to have followed Matthieu Criaerd in favouring lacquer with such large-scale flowers. Panels that are particularly close in design were employed by Criaerd on a commode and a corner cupboard sold at Hugo Helbing, Frankfurt am Main, 23 June 1936, Lots 242 and 244.

In overall good original condition. With the inevitable chips, marks and scratches consistent with age and use. Some light craquelure and tenting to the lacquer, commensurate with age and the nature of the decoration. Some slight shrinkage cracks visible through the lacquer due to movement. Some small losses restoration and touch-ups to the lacquer throughout. Some light flaking to the vernis martin decoration to the uprights with subsequent touch ups. The marble top with two expertly repaired vertical breaks and with some minor scratches and areas of infill repair. A few small losses to the marble top. Some very minor wear to the gilt border. One handle on the upper drawer placed slightly higher than the other to accommodate the design of the lacquer. The mount to the apron missing the tip of its far right extremity. The mounts retaining some of the original gilt varnish, now rubbed. The decoration with a few minor touch ups but overall maintains its impressive original appearance. This stunning commode is structurally sound and ready to place.
