FRENCH SCHOOL FIRST HALF 19th CENTURY, FOLLOWER OF FRANÇOIS-XAVIER FABRE, PORTRAIT OF A MAN WITH A HAT, HALF-LENGTH, OIL ON CANVAS

This charmingly nonchalant portrait is a copy after François-Xavier Fabre’s (1766-1837) Portrait of a young man in a red cape, now in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Montreal (inv. no. 2001-35). Previously attributed to Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), it was reattributed to the Montpellier artist when it first appeared on the art market in 1990.
Fabre’s work is rectangular in format, and the historic stretcher bar marks visible on the present painting to centre left and centre right indicate that it was also conceived of as a rectangle but that the canvas was later transformed into an oval.

拍品專文

Ce portrait au charme désinvolte est une copie d'après le Portrait d’un jeune homme avec une cape rouge de François-Xavier Fabre (1766-1837) actuellement conservé au musée des beaux-arts à Montréal (no. inv. 2001-35). Précédemment attribué à Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), ce dernier est restitué à l’artiste montpelliérain au moment de son passage sur le marché de l'art en 1990.
L’œuvre de Fabre est de format rectangulaire, et les marques du l’ancien châssis, visibles au centre à gauche et à droite sur notre tableau, indiquent que le tableau ci-présent avait originellement également été conçu sous un format rectangulaire et que la toile a été mise au format ovale à une date ultérieure.
