Lot Essay

The present four plates likely belong to a service sold to the Paris marchand-bijoutier Jacques Dumoulin in the first half 1774. The original order included 36 assiettes at a cost of 33 livres each. Amazingly, the service remained intact until it was offered by the Angerstein family at Christie's, London, 10 June 1860, lot 122, where it was described as "rose du Barri, beautifully gilt and exquisitely painted with bouquets of flowers". For a further discussion, see D. Peters, op. cit., no. 74-6, where Peters also notes examples with date letter X (1775) attributed to the service and states that 'the date of 1775 of some items...is inconsistent with purchase by Dumolin in 1774, but some uncertainty attaches to the use of date letter X". Compare the pair of oval dishes from the Dumoulin service sold Christie's, New York, 9 April 2019, lot 137 and the set of four plates sold from the collection of Eleanor Post Close and Antal Post de Bekessy, sold Sotheby's, Paris, 19 December 2017, lot 447.
