A GERMAN ENAMELLED GOLD BONBONNIERE
PROBABLY MARK OF LES FRERES JORDAN, BERLIN, CIRCA 1780-1790
Large circular box enamelled in translucent royal blue on engine-turned ground of sunrays, the rims and border chased with festoons on white enamelled ground, marked in cover and in base: maker's mark FJ and three pseudo marks of the Paris charge for 1768-1774; on flange: later French control mark (owl) and stamped with workshop number '543'

The “FJ” mark stamped on this bonbonniere has been recorded on more than 7,000 enamelled snuff-boxes dating from 1780 to 1805, suggesting that it corresponds to a large workshop rather than a single maker.
In '18th-Century Snuffboxes: Snuffboxes in the Iakobachvili Collection', Volume I , Monaco, 2024, p. 409, H. Williams provides a detailed analysis of the production of this workshop, noting that the majority of the boxes are made of gold enamelled en plein, and that all are stamped on the flange with a number. He identifies four variants of the “FJ” mark, of which the one appearing on our bonbonniere would have been used in the early years of the workshop, around 1780.
Finally, he suggests that this mark was most likely that of the Frères Jordan Jordan, who were active in Berlin.

Le poinçon ‘FJ’ insculpte sur cette tabatière a été noté sur plus de 7000 tabatières émaillées entre 1780 et 1805 qui suggère qu’il s’agit plutôt d’un important atelier plutôt que d’un seul maître. H. Williams, dans 18th-Century Snuffboxes: Snuffboxes in the Iakobachvili Collection, Volume I, Monaco, 2024, p.409 fait une analyse détaillée de la production de cet atelier notant que la majorité des boîtes sont en or émaillés en plein ; que toutes sont estampillées d’un numéro. Il répertorie quatre variantes du poinçon ‘FJ’ dont celle apposée sur notre bonbonnière serait en usage dans les premières années de l’atelier soit 1780.
Il suggère enfin que cette marque est probablement celle des Frères Jordan actifs à Berlin.
